Set in the Blue Mountains of 17th century Jamaica, Abebi relates the exploits of a female warrior and apprentice healer of a mythical band of runaway slaves. Not your typical slave narrative, Abebi is more of a sacred journey of the soul, the psychological, spiritual, and physical planes of existence. Dripping with mystical realism, this novel creates a seminal place of hope in the darkest of times, and the indelible belief that, no matter the circumstances, the human spirit has the will to love and survive.

Tembe, a young adult novel, is a coming-of-age story of betrayal, loss, and redemption. Tembe, a young Maroon boy, still reeling with hurt after his father's death, takes drastic measures to ensure his success during his rite-of-passage ceremony. His actions, however, brings new dangers to their secret compound, threatens the sanctity of their precarious freedom, and changes their lives forever.

THE MAROONS

Nestled in the foothills of Blue Mountain in Portland Jamaica, lay Mooretown, a Maroon village which has flourished since its founding in 1739. It is now deemed a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Maroons were inhabitants of runaway slave societies that existed for centuries in the Jamaican mountains. They conducted guerilla warfare against the British for nearly 200 years and developed a unique sub-culture that has survived to this day.

Maroon societies existed all over the Americas, from Jamaica to Haiti, to Brazil, to Suriname, to St. Vincent, and even in the United States.
